Working with Universities: Student Placements
ASORC is looking to update its list of placement supervisors for university students. We would be grateful for any assistance that anyone may be able to provide.
Placement supervisors perform the roles of educator, facilitator, manager and professional role model. They have ultimate responsibility for the services provided by the students whom they supervise.
Placement supervisors’ responsibilities include:
- Providing students with an environment that stimulates learning through constructive mutual feedback, active mutual questioning, and debriefing.
- Providing students with experiences in service provision with a variety of clients / client groups / work tasks and introducing techniques / strategies used in the organisation.
- Providing students with service provision responsibilities commensurate with their competence, experience, year of enrolment and placement objectives.
- Acknowledging student supervision as a vital professional activity, as an investment in the profession.
- Providing students with the resources required to perform to the best of their ability, including orientation to the service & organisation, required readings, regular & constructive feedback, regular & weekly discussion time, professional experience & information.
- Ensuring that adequate facilities are available to enhance the teaching-learning process (e.g. Somewhere for students to meet with clients, write reports, read articles).
- Encouraging students to use their background knowledge, skills and attributes and consolidate and expand these in the fieldwork setting.
- Enabling students to participate in professional development activities aimed at developing their professional skills.
- Discussing issues with the Work Integrated Learning Academic regarding the students and/or placement, issues of fieldwork administration or other issues which may arise.
- Providing the Work Integrated Learning team with current information about the organisation for their records.
Help your staff grow their leadership skills and develop your talent pipeline by taking on student placements. For further information or if you are able to assist students with a placement, please contact ASORC National Office at admin@asorc.org.au
