NDIA Integrity Fraud Fusion Taskforce Update

NDIA Integrity Fraud Fusion Taskforce Update

The Natioanl Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is committed to protecting all National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants' safety and the integrity of the NDIA. Through the Fraud Fusion Taskforce, the NDIS is working closely with the NDIS Quality and Safeguard Commission, Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, Australian Federal Police, and Australian Taxation Office. The Taskforce has 19 Commonwealth Agencies working together to find and stop fraud and serious organised crime in the NDIS.

Below is an update on information:

  • The Taskforce know that most people connected to the NDIS do the right thing. The Taskforce also know that some people deliberately do the wrong thing and commit fraud against the Scheme.
  • The Taskforce are identifying and targeting people who commit fraud and exploit participants and their funding.
  • The Taskforce are working hard to improve their systems and processes to better detect fraud and strengthen integrity in the NDIS as part of the Crack Down on Fraud program.
  • The Taskforce is aiming to make it ‘easier to get it right and harder to get it wrong’ for anyone engaging with the NDIS.
  • With this work underway, there has been growing media attention and public commentary about the NDIS.
  • The Taskforce aim to be open and transparent about fraud and integrity risks, especially around the need to improve their systems.
  • The Taskforce regularly share outcomes of fraud investigations to the media and public, however sometimes it isn’t always possible to provide detailed information or data.
  • This is intentional to protect the integrity and privacy of ongoing investigations or prosecutions in place and not to promote opportunistic fraud behaviour.
  • The Taskforce are committed to protecting the safety, privacy and wellbeing of all NDIS participants, which is also why there is some information they can’t share.
  • The Taskforce encourage NDIS participants, providers and the public to continue to report any suspected fraud cases to the NDIA to investigate.
  • Due to greater awareness, the Taskforce are receiving a record number of tip-offs, leading to increased fraud investigations and prosecutions.
  • Everyone who engages with the NDIA needs to act with honesty and integrity. We are all responsible for ensuring the integrity of the NDIS.
  • If you think someone is doing the wrong thing with NDIS funds, please report it.
  • It will take The Taskforce some time to deliver everything they want to, by working together we can help make sure the Scheme continues to support people with disability their families and carers.
