As part of our 50th birthday celebrations we have been asking ASORC members to reflect on their experiences. This newsletter we are delighted to bring you a reflection from Dawn Winter.
I’m grateful for the chance to share my journey in a profession I’ve embraced and promoted in ways I never imagined.
Over forty years ago, I discovered Rehabilitation Counselling through the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service. I never expected it would shape my life so deeply or allow me to help so many people overcome barriers and participate fully in work and community.
I was drawn to this field by its blend of compassion, advocacy, and belief in human potential. I’ve seen people facing injury or adversity achieve far more than seemed possible restoring dignity, independence, and hope. Rehabilitation Counsellors do much more than help people return to work; we help rebuild lives.
This profession also connected me with inspiring colleagues and mentors. Trevor Hawkins, a visionary leader, taught me to see beyond challenges and focus on what’s possible for each person. His belief in our work and the guidance of other early mentors shaped my career and inspired me to mentor others.
As Rehabilitation Counsellors, we often work quietly but make a real difference every day. Our roles are diverse spanning vocational rehab, disability employment, case management, advocacy, and more.
As ASORC marks 50 years, it’s vital we share these stories and shine a light on the impact of our profession in building a more inclusive society.
Thank you for inviting members to contribute to this campaign. I’ve shared pieces that reflect my journey and the values that inspire my commitment to Rehabilitation Counselling.
