Membership Levels

ASORC Full Membership

Full Membership is open to Rehabilitation Counselling practitioners who meet the relevant qualifications and experience requirements. To ensure all members meet ASORC competency standards, applications are reviewed on an individual basis by the ASORC Membership Sub Committee.

CPD

To maintain Full Membership, you are required to complete the Full Member CPD goal of 20 hours annually.

Full Membership is open to applicants who have completed:

  • an ASORC accredited undergraduate (Bachelor) degree in Rehabilitation Counselling OR
  • a Master or Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling and an undergraduate (Bachelor) or postgraduate degree in Psychology or Behavioural Sciences.

ASORC Associate Membership

This level of membership is open to applicants who do not meet the requirements for Full Membership of ASORC. This level of membership is time limited, with the understanding that the requirements for Full Membership will be fulfilled during this time. Note: the decision to recognise Associate Membership is made independently by each WorkCover Authority - please contact your state WorkCover Authority to confirm their requirements. 

Criteria for Associate Membership

Associate Membership is open to applicants who have completed:

  • an undergraduate (Bachelor) and postgraduate degree in Psychology or Behavioural Sciences  OR
  • an undergraduate (Bachelor) in Behavioural Science with a major in Rehabilitation Counselling  OR
  • an undergraduate (Bachelor) in Psychology (Honours) OR
  • an unrelated undergraduate degree, with a Master or Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling  

Requirements for upgrade to Full Membership 

To progress to Full Membership, Associate Members must:

  1. within 12 months of acceptance of membership as an Associate Member, enrol in and commence tertiary studies in Rehabilitation Counselling. This may be a Graduate Diploma or Master of Rehabilitation Counselling course, to be completed within a 6 year period;
  2. engage in the following supervision and mentoring programs to support the Associate member in the workplace;
    1. within 3 months of commencement of Associate membership must undertake the  ASORC Professional Supervision Program (12 months) 
      and 
    2. On completion of the enrolled course will participate in the ASORC Mentoring program (monthly for a total of 6 sessions).
      Associate members who have already completed the Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling or Master of Rehabilitation Counselling are only required to complete the Mentoring Program (2 b).
  3. complete the Associate Member CPD goal of 25 hours annually

Understand the Pathway to Membership

ASORC Student Membership

ASORC FREE Student membership is open to full-time and part-time students who are enrolled in any tertiary level qualification. Student Membership does not deem the person to be qualified to carry out certain services under the various accident and workers compensation schemes. A Student Member must not represent themselves as a qualified Rehabilitation Counsellor.

Once students have fulfilled the requirements of their academic studies they are no longer deemed to be student members of the Society and are encouraged to apply for ASORC professional membership, subject to meeting ASORC membership criteria. 

Duration of Membership

Annual Student Memberships from 1 January to 31 December each year.

Retired Membership

Retired membership is open to ASORC members who have retired from the workforce but who still wish to maintain contact with ASORC.

Eligibility Requirements for Retired Membership

  • Retired Membership is open to applicants who:
  • have reached the age of 55 years or older;
  • have retired from practicing rehabilitation counselling services;
  • do not receive any fee, retainer or income from practising in the rehabilitation counselling profession;
  • are not engaged in any other profession or business.
